If you finance your smart on any of our finance products then you are obliged to take out fully comprehensive motor insurance for the duration of your agreement.

Motor Insurance by smart is specifically tailored for our smart customers and offers extensive cover and is designed to keep you safe.

Motor Insurance by smart features include:


  • 24 hours, seven days a week UK accident recovery to your nearest smart approved repairer.
  • Unlimited cover for manufacturer specification in-car audio and telecommunications equipment, fitted by the factory or Retailer.
  • If your smart is stolen or subject to total loss then a courtesy car will be provided for up to 14 days or until the settlement cheque is received depending on which is sooner.
  • 180 days' cover as standard for temporary visits to most of mainland Europe (up to 3 months in one trip).
  • New car replacement within the first 12 months for the original owner if your smart is a total loss

How First Cover works

Once you've chosen your smart you understandably can't wait to drive it away. With First Cover from smart you don't have to wait because we offer 7 days complimentary motor insurance cover when you buy a new or used smart from a smart Retailer.

You will receive an annual quotation prior to your First Cover documentation being sent directly to your Retailer. Which means you will have everything ready when it comes to collecting your new smart.

GAP Insurance by smart

GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) Insurance by smart offers you the opportunity to not incur financial loss, if your smart is written off and is not replaced by the motor insurer. There are two types of GAP Insurance products depending on how you choose to finance your car.

To determine which GAP Insurance product is best for you, your Business Manager will be pleased to assess your needs and will only offer you insurance products that they believe will benefit you.

This product is also available for Hire and Reward vehicles. Speak to your Business Manager for further information and policy costs.

How GAP works

What is Combined GAP Insurance by smart?

It offers you the opportunity to not incur financial loss if your smart is written off and is not replaced by the motor insurer; when your motor insurer may only pay out the market value at the time of the loss.

If you have chosen to finance your smart?

Combined GAP Insurance by smart makes up any shortfall between your comprehensive motor insurance settlement offer and the original purchase invoice price, or if greater the shortfall between the finance settlement.

If you purchase your smart as a cash buyer?

Combined GAP Insurance by smart makes up any shortfall between your comprehensive motor insurance settlement offer and the original purchase invoice price.

What is Lease GAP Insurance by smart?

In the event of your smart being written off, our product is designed to protect you against the risk of any shortfall in your lease agreement. Following the comprehensive motor insurance settlement, Lease GAP Insurance by smart will pay the difference between this and the cost to clear your lease agreement and help you start a new one.

How GAP Insurance pays out

Combined GAP Insurance example

If you paid £14,000 for your smart and it is written off and your motor insurance company agree to pay out £10,000. Combined GAP Insurance by smart will pay-out £4,000, making up the shortfall between the price you originally paid.

Lease GAP Insurance example

Your vehicle is written off and your motor insurance company agree to pay out £10,000 but you still owe £14,000 on your lease agreement. Lease GAP Insurance by smart will pay-out £4,000 to clear your lease agreement and help you start a new one.

Alloy Wheel Insurance by smart

Alloy Wheel Insurnace by smart has been designed to help you keep your alloy wheels in showroom condition. This product allows you to claim for accidental and malicious damage made to your alloy wheels.

How it works

In the event of accidentally kerbing or scuffing your alloy wheel, Alloy Wheel Insurance by smart will cover this damage, assisting you in maintaining a showroom appearance.

Painted wheels will either be repaired on a mobile basis or replaced dependent on the extent of damage. Diamond cut wheels will be replaced only.

If your vehicle has been financed with Mercedes-Benz Finance, Alloy Wheel Insurance by smart may help prevent additional charges when returning your smart at the end of your agreement. Click here to see full Vehicle Return Standards

Why choose Alloy Wheel Insurance by smart?


  • You can choose the term of your policy from 24, 36 and 48 months to complement the length of time that you plan to own your smart.
  • You are covered for up to 10 repairs or 4 replacements, up to your total claims limit.
  • If the damage cannot be repaired to the approved smart standard, the alloy wheel will be replaced with a brand new alloy wheel.
  • Your Motor Insurance no claims bonus will not be affected when making a claim.
  • No excess applies for repairs.

To make a claim

To make a claim simply contact us on 01279 456 507 and register your claim. Once authorised please provide the complete claims form and return to us at mercedesbenzclaims@autoprotect.net


Please include:

  • Photograph(s) of the damaged alloy wheel(s)
  • The policy number and vehicle details
  • Full details of the damage.

If the claim is covered by the policy, verbal authorisation will be given to carry out the specified repair. The authorised claim will be passed to the repairer, who will contact you directly to arrange a repair/replacement appointment.
